One of Indonesia's top militant suspects is on trial in Jakarta on terror charges.

Abdullah Sunata has been accused of helping to plot the failed assassinations of senior officials.

It has also been alleged his planning included attacks on Western hotels and embassies in Jakarta.

Prosecutors have claimed he purchased thousands of dollars worth of weapons for a militant group known as al-Qaeda in Aceh and met frequently with Dulmatin, the mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombings.

Dulmatin was killed by police in March.

Prosecutors have asked for the death penalty for Sunata who has already spent time in prison for his role in an attack on the Australian embassy in 2004.

He was granted an early release for good behavior last year, but was detained in June in a series of police raids in Central Java.

Sunata has denied the charges.
