Tips on Reading English News

Reading news in English is one of the ways that is done by a lot of people in order to master this international language. News contain new information and often new words or vocabularies. Every time English learners read news, they may get frustrated by the too many new vocabularies which they have to understand. If this continues to happen, and they feel that they don't make any progress, there will be possibilities where they decide to stop learning English language. To prevent it from happening, I have written several tips as follows:
  1. Read news in the language that you understand from the same news agency. Here is what I mean, there are a number of news agencies in the world that provide news materials in various languages. Two of them are VOA (Voice of America) and the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). They broadcast news and other programs such as art, culture, sports, business and economy in various languages. Log on to one of these websites, for example, the VOA and choose a sub-site that is the same as the language that you know. Read one of the hottest news. Of course you can understand its content easily.
  2. After that, open the English version of the VOA's website and read the same news. Generally, VOA provide news with titles and contents that are the same but are presented in various languages. If you had understood the content of the news, for example in Indonesian language, when you read the same news that is written in English, you will easily get the meaning of the new vocabularies or words in it.
Why I suggest thing like that? Because there are tendencies where staffs in the news agencies of VOA and BBC translate the news presented in their homepages into different languages. It is impossible for their content to be different or contradicted from one another in one news agency. By reading the news written in your own language and then re-reading it in English version, you can understand the English content faster. But if you have done this tip for at least 3 months and have mastered at least 3,000 basic words or vocabularies then my suggestion for you is applying the third tip.
  1. When reading English news, hold an English language dictionary which is published for English learners. There are two important dictionaries which I recommend, i.e. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. When you find new vocabularies, find their meaning and explanations in these dictionaries.
